Getting ready to set up that fitness business or gym?

Congratulations!

It’s about time.

So, what are you going to call your fitness business?

Here are some of my favorite tools to promote your fitness business:

You don’t want something too ambiguous and you also don’t want something too “cheesy.”

And you don’t need anything cliché!

Sounds like something tricky?

Well, that’s quite relatable.

Starting as a newbie and trying to find a name can be quite frustrating especially if it looks like the best names have been taken already.

So the big question is: how do you come up with a fitness name?

And you don’t want to come up with just anything.

You want something that sticks, something memorable, especially considering that a gym name isn’t exactly something you can just change whenever you want.

It’s stuck in the minds of your customers and hey – why should I trust what you can make out of my body if you don’t even know what you’re doing with your business name?

So you see, your business name is the most important element of your fitness brand.

Talk of the first impression.

Understand that it is essential to put in the work you need to get it right the first time you start.

This is because your business name can have a huge impact on the success of your venture.

Besides, if you’ve decided and are serious, you have to register your business as a legal entity and all of that, and you’ll need a name.

Might as well make it good.

This guide was created to show you how to choose a fitness business or gym name that can cut you some slack and save you a whole lot of stress.

Whether it’s a gym or a product company you’re starting, in this guide, we’ll lead you through the steps to take to come up with your unique fitness business name.

What Should I Call My Fitness Business?

Just before we take you through the five-step guide to creating your fitness business name, here are some key factors to keep in mind:

#1 What’s My Type of Fitness Business?

Fitness name generator

You don’t want to be everything to everyone.

Even superman knows that is exhausting if not plain, impossible.

Ask yourself “what am I bringing to the table?”

The fitness industry is adding new types of services every year and so are fitness entrepreneurs.

Whether it’s becoming a physical therapist, starting a yoga studio, becoming a Personal Trainer, opening a walking club, or even your juice bar, there has to be something specific.

So, what kind of business do you want to run?

This is important because the name should be able to tell your customers what to expect.

You don’t want to leave them in the dark about what you offer.

 #2 What Are My Goals?

Now, you might wonder, “what’s the direct correlation between my business goals and naming my business?”

It has way more influence on picking the right name than you think.

Here’s a question you should answer: What exactly do I want to achieve by delivering this fitness service?

You’re probably going to mention making money, but not so fast.

That’s what every company is about.

When you’re writing your goals, think in terms of value-addition

What kind of value can you give to health-conscious people?

You may have something like: “I want my customers to be happier and more energetic with better lifestyles.”

It’s up to you.

#3 What Brand Identity do I want to build?

Talking of identity, a company or business name is not just something to help people recognize your products and services.

That’s part of it, but beyond it, what comes to people’s minds when your Business name pops up?

What emotions do you want your business name to evoke?

When you think of Nike, you feel confident.

What will your customers feel when they experience your brand?

#4 What Are My Competitors’ Business Names?

Fitness name generator

It’s not enough to pick a name.

You want to make sure you know your competitors.

Research your competitors’ business names.

There may be dozens of fitness clubs in your city.

Check them out.

Make a list of their names and ask yourself “What can I do to make my fitness business name stand out?”

Remember that a unique name is the first thing that will attract your potential customers to your fitness service.

People love exclusivity. Use that.

In a nutshell, your fitness business name should be simple, unique, and memorable.

Simple: You don’t want people trying to remember how many syllables it is or if they’re pronouncing it right. Keep it simple.

Unique: If it’s cliché, you have no edge. You’re just another face lost in the crowd. Be unique.

Memorable: Don’t have a name that’s hard to remember and don’t choose one that’s easy to forget. Let it stick.

Now that we’ve considered the factors to pay attention to as you choose your fitness business name, let’s go on to a simple, five-step guide to generating your fitness business name.

How Do You Come Up With A Fitness Name?

Step #1: Brainstorm Keywords

First, begin by listing words related to your brand.

Do you want the perfect name for your gym or product venture?

The key is to start big and then filter it down to the perfect word combination.

This is the part where you get a pen and a paper or a whiteboard and a marker to note your ideas on.

Resist the temptation to use your computer.

This freehand method is preferable because sometimes ideas can go fast and furious. Way faster than you can type.

You don’t want the frustration of losing all the good stuff that comes in your eureka moment just because you couldn’t type fast enough.

Unless you can.

So at this point, it’s you and your blank paper or whiteboard or a blinking cursor waiting on you.

What’s the best way to brainstorm ideas?

Sometimes, you already have an idea of what direction you want to go, at other times, you’re blank.

Either way, we recommend working through these steps below.

It will ensure you get the best name for your business.

It sucks to choose a name and three months down the line think of something better.

Let’s keep the ‘branding remorse’ at the barest minimum, shall we?

Ask yourself the following questions and write down all the words that come to mind.

It’s best if you list at least three keywords per question.

But it’s even smarter to go for more.

  1. What will make my business different from others?

Think of this as your Unique Selling Point (USP) or your Competitive Advantage. This can help to trigger different keywords. Your own USP might be 24-hour access, being an ultra-modern facility, or maybe being a specialist in one area of wellness, say, yoga.

You decide.

  1. What values do I want my business to stand for?

This will come from your deep-seated convictions. Think about it, when you walk into a business facility, what values do you look out for? What kind of behaviors would you want your business to possess if it were human? Would it be welcoming, inclusive, passionate, caring, genuine, strong? What would it be?

  1. What is my core product or service offering?

At this point, apply caution. You don’t want to name a business or product that isn’t available anymore after two years. Only include what is central to your business model or at least something that you are committed to long-term. It could be Personal Training, Indoor Cycling, or Relaxation.

  1. How do I want my customers to feel?

This shouldn’t be hard? It’s similar to number three. Evaluate how you’d want to feel if you used a service like what you offer. You might want your customers to feel nourished, energized, calm, improved, renewed, and cared for. It’s still up to you.

Once you have three keywords (at least) for each question, you can proceed to step 2.

Step #2: Get Creative

Now, it’s time to go from “Good” to “Awesome!”

Most people settle for “good” and that’s just what it is.

This second step is where we refine and craft the words we’ve chosen, so we know we’re left with the very best name options.

You should have at least 12+ name options from step 1.

Let’s take it further.

Now, brainstorm 4 alternative words that convey the same meaning for EACH of the 12 keywords.

This is a good place to employ helpful tools, not just brainpower, good as that is.

You can use the ‘synonyms’ function in Microsoft Word.

Simply select one word, right-click the mouse and click on the ‘synonyms’ to view a list of alternatives.

Or you can employ a trustworthy Thesaurus website like Thesaurus.com or OxfordDictionaries.com

Only include the words that appeal to you.

In case you find that for all your alternative words, you have already hit the perfect word in step 1, then don’t overthink it.

If you do add the 4 alternatives for each 12 from step 1, you should end up with an additional 48 keyword ideas.

Add these to the existing 12.

That makes it 60 words in total.

Now, it’s time to start trimming the list into your creative fitness business name.

Step #3: Apply a Framework

Please note: there’s no magic formula for naming your fitness or gym business.

No. That would throw all the creativity and fun out the window!

We don’t want that.

Instead, we’re suggesting you employ a framework as your very own fitness business name generator.

This will help you to organize your ideas and test-run their workability as real-life brand names.

So, at this point, you chop the large chunk of ideas into a structure that you can work through and sort out line by line.

Now here’s a secret: this is a strategy Leading Marketing Agencies and Global Companies use in their naming. Shhhh.

How does this work? First, pick one or two frameworks that appeal to you from the following:

Try to insert all your keywords into the gym name generator framework and see which one you like best. You can do this verbally.

You don’t have to have it all written out.

But write down the ones you do like the sound of.

This should narrow your list down to 3 to 5 creative gym name ideas.

You’re making progress.

Now unto the next step.

Step #4: Due Diligence

OK. This is getting exciting.

But hold on. We need to be sure your creative fitness name hasn’t already been taken by another company.

This is a very sensitive part.

To do this, you need to search on the following:

  1. Google: Perform a Google search for the company names. Make sure to use quotation marks to ensure you get exact matches. So, if Soul Cycle is your idea, then enter “Soul Cycle” into Google.
  1. Facebook: Run the same search using Facebook to see if there are any companies with the same names that were too small to be found by Google.
  1. Trademark: Also run a trademark search to find any companies already registered with the names. You can do this online for free via the United States Patents & Trademarks Office or UK Intellectual Property Office (or the equivalent site for your own country).
  1. Website Domain: Do a domain name search as well to see if the website URL is available. Bluehost offers a comprehensive search and suggests alternatives if the domain name isn’t available.

If your shortlisted names pass all the above, you’re good to go!

But if a name you love has been taken already, then you still have a few options:

And now…

Step #5: Get Feedback

So, you have your workable shortlist.

It’s time to test how it resonates with your target audience.

Think: What kind of customer would I like to attract?

Who do I know that falls into that category?

Then ask their opinion.

Don’t try to second guess.

If you’re a Personal Trainer for instance, who’s expanding into a studio, then ask your already existing clients what name they’d like.

You can always do this over coffee or online, via Facebook or email.

Asking the right people is key.

You can ask your family members and friends.

However, what you want is to be sure if your fitness business name will appeal to your target audience.
